§ 9 of 15

Moisture

Cardboard is paid by weight, and water adds weight, so buyers set a moisture limit and deduct for wet weight above it. The clause should state the limit, the test method, when the test is done, and the deduction formula. Without those four, a moisture claim is a number you have to take on trust.

9.1

What is a typical moisture limit?

It is set by the buyer's specification. Kruger's published OCC #11 specification states a humidity maximum of 8% (plus or minus 2%). Other buyers use other numbers; get yours in writing.

9.2

How are moisture deductions calculated?

A common method deducts the weight above the limit: with a 10% limit and a measured 14%, 4% of the load's weight is not paid. Some contracts deduct a fixed price per point instead, or reject bales above a ceiling. The calculator uses the first method, which is easy to check, and shows the deducted weight on its own line.

9.3

How do I keep bales dry?

Store bales under cover and off wet floors, keep trailer doors closed in rain, and do not bale cardboard that has been rained on in an open dumpster. If your site cannot keep bales dry, say so before agreeing a tight limit.

Sample wording

Illustrative wording to adapt. Brackets are choices to make.

9.1 Moisture. Material shall not exceed [10]% moisture by weight, measured by [method] at Buyer’s receiving scale on the day of delivery. For each full percentage point above that limit, [one percent] of the net weight of the load shall be deducted. Buyer shall report each reading on the settlement statement.

9.5

What to negotiate

  • Ask for the test method, the number of readings per load and when they are taken.
  • Deduct weight above the limit only, not the whole load.
  • Require each reading on the statement, with the load number.

Red flags in a draft

  • Moisture "as determined by Buyer" with no method.
  • Deductions from the whole load for any reading over the limit.

Questions

How much moisture is allowed in cardboard bales?
The buyer’s specification sets it. One published mill specification states 8% maximum, plus or minus 2%.
